FROM SELFLESS TO SELFIES

The only time I seriously questioned my finance major at school was during the spring semester of my senior year when I took an Art History class as a filler for my schedule. I absolutely loved it.

Iā€™ve also now forgotten 99% of it.

The 1% I still recall is the striking shift from the Byzantineā€™s flat, religious paintings to the Renaissanceā€™s rich, beautiful depictions of mortals. Artistically, I perceived it as a major aesthetic upgrade. Intellectually, I accepted it as a visual representation of individuals becoming increasingly obsessed with themselves. Out with Christ, in with Albrecht DĆ¼rer.

Christ Pantocrator (1280)

Albrecht DĆ¼rerā€™s Self Portrait at 28 (1500)

Notice the hand in both paintings? Not a coincidence.
